South Africa hosts the 2010 World Cup

I can’t believe that there are only 84 days until the world’s biggest festival: The World Cup. How come the time passed so fast?

2010 World Cup will be held in South Africa and economists are already calculating how much profit South Africa will gain from it. This is the first time an African nation hosting the World Cup. Many experts were uncertain for South Africa where regions besides big cities are so wild, will build the infrastructures needed for the World Cup on time. However, FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) approved that the World Cup will be successfully held in South Africa and it would bring lots of economic benefit for South Africa.

The estimated profit is around 661 million dollars. However, there are still many problems issued by many experts. Because the crime rate in South Africa is so high, it is true that many people are avoiding to visit South Africa for the sake of their lives. 800,000, one-third of the total tickets are still not sold and FIFA is trying to bargain it for a 30% discount. Compared to the 2 million supporters during 2006 World Cup in Germany, it is obvious that the crime rate, 50 per a day, scared off the soccer-holics and the hooligans.

No one knows if the 2010 World Cup is going to end as a success or a failure but it is for a fact that Africa still has lots of things to improve. I also hope that the world’s largest festival doesn’t end up as a blood shed between the thieves and the tourists.
